  • Farmall Cub Tractor

    Farmall Cub Tractor

This morning I woke up early and went for a walk.  The sun was shining through the window and the day called for me to join.

Half a mile from my house I passed a couple of old farm tractors.

The first tractor I saw was the Farmall Cub above.  I wish the tractor was in my garage.  One of my dreams is to own a Farmall Cub and wagon and take my kids for rides around the yard or just drive it in circles around the yard.

    Someday.

Next I saw was a Farmall 656 Tractor.  I don’t know a thing about this tractor besides the fact that it’s big.  Very big!

I wish you a fun Friday.

  • Dog Days of Summer

    Dog Days of Summer

That’s Theo our Great Pyrenees mix enjoying shade in the back of my truck on a hot summer’s day.

I thought  Theo was a Great Pyrenees.  However, he’s almost two and not ‘fluffing out’ like a Great Pyrenees.  I think he’s a Great Pyrenees with some Golden Retriever mixed in.

Theo is an incredibly intelligent, patient and loving 90 lb boy.  He wants nothing more than to be where I am.

Last week I dropped the kids off at camp with Theo riding shotgun.  When we returned Theo didn’t want to get out of the truck.

He knew I’d be heading out soon enough or perhaps he simply enjoys the cozy spot in the back of the truck.  Whatever the reason, Theo wasn’t coming out.

  • Frost on Window

    Frost on Window

Last weekend the temperature went down to -12.6 degrees Fahrenheit in Newtown, Connecticut.  I’ve never seen temperatures that low in this area.  The previous low was -6 or -3 last year.

The frost created beautiful crystals on the window.  I’m sure there’s a scientific explanation for why.  I’m just going to enjoy their beauty.

  • Plants Want to Grow

    Plants Want to Grow

    Plants amaze me.

I spend a lot of time and effort making the best possible environment for my landscapes.  Then, I’ll be walking through the woods and see a tree growing out of a boulder.

You almost have to go out of your way to kill a plant.

These onions growing in my kitchen are a great example of a plants wish to live.

Bonus photo: This red Amaryllis graces my kitchen counter. If you’ve never grown an Amaryllis pick one up. They’re a lot of fun to grow and hard to kill.

    A Father’s Pride – Allison’s Chicken

My daughter Allison drew this picture of a chicken for me.  She’s six years old and knows I like chickens.

Alli drew these tulips on the back of her placemat at a local diner.

    Allison, I love your pictures!

  • Pumpkins in the Landscape

    Pumpkins in the Landscape

Yesterday I visited a landscape planted last week.  While photographing the landscape I noticed the oddest site.

Nestled between a Siberian Carpet (Microbiota decussata) and PJM Rhododendron (Rhododendron ‘PJM’) was a thriving pumpkin seedling.

    How could this happen?

The compost used to prepare the soil was the composting spot of several years of Holden family pumpkins.  The moist soil and ample sun in the new landscape set the seed in motion.

    Happy Halloween!

  • Beefsteak Tomato Roadside Stand

    Beefsteak Tomato Roadside Stand

This week I took the kids and dog for a walk and stumbled across a tomato plant (Solanum lycopersicum) growing in the crack between the curb and the asphalt.  A plant’s will to live is amazing.  I can’t wait to return this summer for some Beefsteaks!
